Pond dipping - The children worked in small groups collecting pond creatures and recording what they found.  We then studied them in more depth on a big screen through a goose necked camera.

Dragonfly Workshop We looked closely into the life cycle of Dragon and Damselflies.  The children made a dragonfly on a stick to take home.

Newt workshop We were given a unique opportunity to get ‘close up’ with a great crested newt as we were allowed to handle them carefully.

Minibeast Hunting – Using the farmland at Bickley Hall Farm the children went on a Minibeast Hunt. They searched the grassland, hedges and trees using demonstrated collection techniques.

As part of British values week we researched astronaut Tim Peake. We made our own mini-topic books and then went on to building a model of him. We think he looks amazing!

Every year the UK produces 31 million tonnes of household rubbish. Our Zoo Ranger, Phil talked about the effects this rubbish is having on our environment and endangered animals. We talked about the part we can play to reduce the impact on the planet.

Well done all KS2 children for working so hard to produce the magnificent deer now displayed in our school garden. We have been fortunate to work with Sarah Gallagher Hayes, a practising willow artist, who guided us carefully through the process of construction. Such a fabulous experience enjoyed by all.

Superb effort Year 5/6. We all enjoyed a day sharing our books and dressing up. In the afternoon was the much awaited Staff V Children Book Quiz. This is the tenth year it has taken place. It was a close call as we had to go to a tie breaker.The staff won by one point making the overall score 5-5.

Mrs Hughes and the Global Committee organised a superb Fairtrade Breakfast for us this week.Back in class we tried to see how much juice we could get out of a fairtrade orange and sampled fairtrade bananas. The best bit was having a blindfolded taste test of fairtrade chocolate to see which one we liked best.

The Ancient Maya

More than 1000 years ago, the Maya civilization thrived in Mesoamerica. This region includes Central America and the southern part of Mexico. The Maya culture was rich and diverse. They studied the stars and the planets. They created calendars, developed a sophisticated system of writing and built incredible buildings.

Year 5/6 have constructed large heads based on Mayan sculptures and drawings. It has been great fun…..if a little messy!

We have used the iPads to take photographs of our amaryllis as it grows and flowers. We have taken measurements and intend to use this information to plot graphs in our mathematics lessons. We have also set the camera rolling on a bunch of daffodils. Hopefully we will have clips to show you soon.

Chester Zoo Safari Ranger brings a little bit of the zoo to our classroom!

During the session we learnt more about life cycles. It was an interactive workshop where we explored what a life cycle was using examples of mammals, amphibians and insects. With the use of ‘whose eggs’ and mystery objects we learnt how diverse the animal kingdom is and the varying ways in which animals grow.

We look forward to welcoming the Ranger again next term when we  focus on the effects rubbish is having on our environment and endangered animals.

The junior children enjoyed a wonderful morning filled with music. Mr Scott joined us and he taught us lots of songs about British history. We sang about the Celts, Romans and Vikings. We also learnt about Victorian times and the Second World War. We used instruments to add beat and rythym.  Thank you Mr Scott, we all had a brilliant time.

The junior children were pleased to welcome Pritpal Makan a Sikh educator, who came to talk to them about Sikhism beliefs and practices.

We all enjoyed Pritpal's lively presentation and we learnt a great deal about people of another faith.

Thank you to Pritpal for visiting and well done to the children for super listening and behaviour during the afternoon.

The children wrote some beautiful pieces of writing to commemorate and remember all the people who have fought and died for our  country. We also talked about British values and what it means to be British and live in our country. In our hall corridor we have a cherished war memorial that lists all of the past Barrow students who fought and died in WW1.

We started this banner with Mrs Nolan at the end of the summer term and finished it off at the beginning of the autumn term. 

Our stimulus was two books; Kingdom of the Sun by Jacqueline Mitton and Zoo in the sky by Christina Balit.

We started our designs in our sketch books then transferred them to fabric. Our stunning banner is displayed in the

school hall.

Making apple juice!, by Mr Ramsden

At Barrow School we have our own apple trees, one of them is a Bramley, the other we are not sure however produces lovely eating apples.

Mr and Mrs Morrison  came in  and we spent the afternoon working with the children through out the school.

The children  had the opportunity to make and taste apple juice straight off the tree. The apples were picked by the infant children then were roughly chopped up. The children took it in turns to wind the grinder until all of the apples were thoroughly minced. They were then put in an apple press.

Approximately 40 apples made one litre. The children all had the opportunity to taste the fresh apple juice.

The children were surprised about the colour which was much darker than shop bought apples plus how sweet it was without any added sugar.

 A huge thanks to Mr and Mrs Morrison who came in to work with the children. We try and give the children at Barrow as many first hand experiences as possible to enrich our curriculum. All of the children had a great afternoon.
