Collage work based around Fibonacci, by Mrs Nolan

Date: 17th Oct 2017 @ 4:10pm

We created our individual collages out of brown box card and anaglypta wallpaper. We formed spirals by carefully cutting out leaf shapes and arranging them. We then attached each of our indiviual pieces together to form a class piece.

We then went on to creating collages using British leaf shapes which we had researched. We added inks in autumn colours to bring the collages together.

Our work was inspired by artist Andy Goldsworthy and the Fibonacci Sequence.

The Fibonacci spiral: an approximation of the golden spiral created by drawing circular arcs connecting the opposite corners of squares in the Fibonacci tiling; this one uses squares of sizes 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13 and 21.They appear everywhere in Nature, from the leaf arrangement in plants, to the pattern of the florets of a flower, the bracts of a pinecone, or the scales of a pineapple.

Ancient Greek Day, by Mrs Nolan

Date: 7th Feb 2017 @ 4:31pm

Today we welcomed 'Makers of History' to our school for an Ancient Greek Workshop Day. We all dressed up as Ancient Greeks for the day to add to the atmosphere.

A rich Athenian lady and a proud Spartan tutor helped the children learn about the wisdom of the Ancient Greeks. From two very different city-states with contrasting outlooks on life, they experienced all the following…….

  • Consulting the Oracle – the children played a game to find out what lay ahead.
  • They handled artefacts and had to decide what each selection were about…school, religion, shopping…..
  • We talked about democracy and took a vote at the end to decide which city state was best. Was it Athens or Sparta?
  • We discovered what it was like growing up in Sparta.
  • We played an authentic Greek board game called Achilles and Ajax.
  • We made a coin from clay and wrote on papyrus with real quills.
  • We solved a problem with the genius Archimedes.
  • Theatre – all the children performed a traditional play about Persephone with costumes, wigs, music and song!
  • We finished off the day with some Greek dancing to live music.

It was a fun-filled, memorable day! Thank you to everyone who made the day such a success.

Tim Peake York Uni Yr six., by Mrs Nolan

Date: 9th Nov 2016 @ 4:25pm

British European Space Agency astronaut Tim Peake spent 6 months living and working onboard the International Space Station.

The UK Space Agency decided to hold two conferences to celebrate the imaginative work linked to Tim Peake’s Principia mission that had been done by children across the UK.

These conferences took place at the University of Portsmouth (2 November 2016) and the University of York (5 November 2016).  We applied to attend the conferences and were subsequently invited to present our work at the York Conference.

With our amazing model of Tim Peake, we set off for York at 7am with Mr Ramsden driving the school minibus. We arrived in good time and set up our display before taking our seats in the main lecture hall.

Tim Peake delivered the keynote speech sharing stories from his time spent on the International Space Station. The children watched the ‘Destination Space Show’ which had scientists demonstrating scientific experiments about forces and gravity. We also had the opportunity to see and hear about what other schools had done.

The highlight of the day was meeting Tim personally. Everyone got to shake his hand and ask a few questions. We were back in Barrow by 5.15pm in time for Bonfire Night.

A truly memorable day for us all.

Dragon, by Mrs Nolan

Date: 3rd Aug 2016 @ 1:10pm

Dragon

The story of Princess Poppy's quest for a dragon. Her villainous suitor, Arkamir, has killed the only dragon in the Kingdom of Freenia. As the local food chain falls into chaos without its top predator, Poppy sets off to find another dragon.

Arkamir tries to foil her quest by sending his incompetent servants, Rogil and Murk, in pursuit.

Along the way Poppy meets new friends - a Dragonologist, a Gatekeeper and a Wizard's apprentice. With the help of the mysterious Piper, Poppy escapes from the sinister Swampbeasts, outwits Arkamir, frees the dragon Firehawk from captivity and returns home triumphant.

Well done to our KS2 children who took part in the production of 'Dragon'

You all worked so hard and with such enthusiasm. We were  so proud of you and enjoyed it so much. A big thank you to you all.
